April 11, 2024 - April 24, 2024 Closed Sundays

Kan-emon Asai received the Minister of Education Award at the Ministry of Education Art Exhibition in 1936, shooting to stardom in the Japanese art world. After the war, being distant from the existing art world, he started up Shinjukai. He repeatedly painted the same motifs over and over such as electric wires, roses, Don Quixote, building the unique world of paintings with imagination.
Among his primary subjects of life, he often painted roses later in his life. His final painting was also of roses. Round and thick roses on the canvas show their bold and gorgeous beauty which still attracts many fans.
In this exhibition, we will exhibit more than 20 pieces of Kan-emon Asai as well as "masterpieces with roses" by the artists fascinated to roses just like Asai. Please enjoy the uniquely brilliant pieces by Bernard Buffet, Tsuguharu Fujita, and artists representing the modern Japanese western-style paintings such as Ryuzaburo Umehara, Takeshi Hayashi, etc.
