January 11, 2024 ~ January 25, 2024 Closed Sundays

We are pleased to introduce "Junkichi Mukai Exhibition" as Galerie Nichido's 100-year anniversary event. His painting works of folk dwellings represented by the thatched roofs have been loved by many people.
Mr. Mukai was born in Kyoto in 1901 and lived through the tumultuous times of the 20th century and devoted his life to production of paintings to record the changing landscapes of Japan. Since he produced the works regarding Niigata in 1945 after we lost the war, he continued to paint folk dwellings as his lifework, of which number goes up to 2,000 pieces.
Under the war damage and the social condition during the period of rapid growth after the war, the Japanese folk dwellings have been fated to quickly diminish and Mr. Mukai endeavored to record how they looked and stood. His artworks are not only the records the disappearing folk dwellings' appearances but also could be said as the records of the everchanging climates, cultures and livings of Japan.
At this exhibition, we will exhibit more than 30 oil painting pieces produced by the artist in his visits to all over Japan including Shinano, Koshu, Kyoto, Tohoku.
You will enjoy the true heart of art of Mukai which describes the culture to the future through Japan's original sceneries.
