Born in Kagoshima, Japan.


Artist's Chronology

1887　　entered Meiji Gakuin University and later went to Tokyo University of Arts
1891　　studied under Naojiro Harada and Seiki Kuroda
1900　　chosen for the student sent oversea by Ministry of Education and he studied in France under Raphael Collin
1903　　returned to Japan and taught as a professor of Tokyo University of Arts
1935　　became a member of the Imperial Fine Arts Academy
1932　　became the president of Tokyo University of Arts
1934　　appointed to a member of the Imperial Arts and Crafts Experts
1943　　received the Order of Culture from the Japanese government
1952　　honored the Order of Cultural Merit
