About nichido
Founded in 1928, galerie nichido is the first gallery in Japan to specialize in Western-style oil painting. Besides our main gallery located in Ginza, Tokyo, we have other branches in Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Karuizawa in Japan. We also have an oversea branch in Paris, France. As a pioneer taking an essential part in the popularization of European art in the country, galerie nichido handles an extensive scale of works from the French Impressionism to contemporary art, and concurrently holds a large assortment of works by Japanese masters and emerging artists. In addition, galerie nichido runs its own publishing department and provide publications both for research and collecting purpose.

galerie nichido has launched the Showa-kai in 1966, an annual contest established for the purpose of promoting young emerging artists. Many past winners of Showa-kai are now leaders of the Japanese art community, and contribute to enriching the cultural environment for succeeding generations. In 1972, the Nichido Art Foundation opened the Kasama Nichido Museum of Art in Kasama City, Ibaraki Japan.
The permanent collection covers works from the French Impressionism to American Pop Art, as well as works created by important Japanese Modern Masters. In addition, the museum owns over 350 palette paintings which were once used as the actual palette by many old masters.
nca | nichido contemporary art was founded in 2001 as a new division of galerie nichido. Inheriting the frontier spirit which galerie nichido holds, we encourage people to re-evaluate their own identity within the contemporary society by introducing Japanese and international contemporary artists, and by planning out experimental, proactive exhibitions.

In 2015, galerie nichido opened a new space in Taipei. galerie nichido Taipei will share the exhibition program with nca | nichido contemporary art, and focus on promoting and discovering modern and contemporary art in Asia. We aspire to establish a multivariate Asian perspective, and continue to convey the spirit and philosophy of our gallery.
